First years begin Transfiguration with simple spells with changing an inanimate object into another inanimate object,
usually of the same size and mass. In Harry's first day in Professor McGonagall's class, the lesson was to change a match
into a needle.
There are many different examples of changing an inanimate object into another throughout the Harry Potter series.
- Turning a match into a needle (SS Chapter 8)
- Changing lettering on Percy's prefect badge (PA Chapter 4)
- Switching Spell: Changing dragon's teeth to wine-gums (GF Chapter 20)
This information was found throughout the Harry Potter series. (Always give credit where it is due.)

Things to Ponder
Could there be some kind of connection between Transfiguration/Animagus and Muggle's theory of evolution?
